When birds fly: graphic novel about loneliness in young newcomers

‘When birds fly: stories of landing’ depicts the experiences of loneliness among young people who have arrived in Flanders as newcomers. The graphic novel was primarily developed for young people in reception education. The story follows three characters during their departure, journey, arrival and search for connection in their new environment. The illustrator, CESSMIR partner Rocio Forero B., based her work on the research of CESSMIR researcher Sarah Devos and her supervisors Katrijn Delaruelle, Benedicte Deforche and Piet Bracke. Sarah conducted doctoral research into the social environment and loneliness among young newcomers in reception education. Rocio and Sarah tell the story visually and without text, in order to facilitate recognition, identification and dialogue – in the classroom and beyond. Sarah’s research is an FWO-funded Rode Neuzen research project, and the visual story is part of a broader valorisation trajectory supported by the Societal Valorisation Fund of Ghent University.
