Partner

Tina De Gendt is a public historian, writer, speaker and curator, based in Ghent (Belgium). She has focused most of her work on putting her hometown’s contemporary history under the microscope, using a critical and global perspective. Migration, urbanity, superdiversity, grassroots and social struggles are recurring themes. Public space, oral history, counter-archiving and participatory fieldwork are at the core of her methods. During her last project, The Square Kilometer (for the Ghent City Museum STAM), she developed a framework for democratizing heritage in superdiversity (negotiating narratives), which was recognized with the European Heritage Award of 2024. She published several books about her work, amongst which Turkije aan de Leie (2014), Ons Gedeeld Verleden (2023) and De Poorten (2024) and translates her projects into walking tours, workshops and lectures.  She has led workshops for CESSMIR members on migration history, public history, and counterarchiving, and guided city walks for CESSMIR members and (international) visitors. In collaboration with various CESSMIR members, she is also supervising a number of master’s theses.
