In Belgium, your ethnic background still has a significant impact on your chances in the job market. People with a migrant background are less likely to be invited for a job interview, earn less, and advance more slowly in their careers. These inequalities are often attributed to a single distinctive characteristic, such as a name that suggests a migrant background. Our new research shows that the story is more complex than that. It is not a single characteristic that matters, but rather the overall impression recruiters form of a person. In other words: how “Belgian” the candidate in question appears to be.
