CESSMIR member Sara Lembrechts and Ellen Van Vooren made a short informative video for children and young people about the Council for Alien Law Litigation. Sara’s doctoral research, under the supervision of Ellen Desmet revealed an important gap: children and young people who receive a negative decision on their asylum application in Belgium and who appeal against that decision to the RVV-CCE currently do not have access to information material about the appeal procedure that is specifically tailored to them. This video explains the procedure in a clear, understandable and supportive way, from the perspective of young people themselves. Young people who have personal experience with the asylum (appeal) procedure are central to every step of the co-creative process: they shared their stories, helped shape the script, acted in the video, provide voice-overs, and collaborated on editing and distributing the film. In addition, judges and staff from the RVV are also involved in the project, as are civil society, asylum and migration experts, and specialists in youth information. Filming took place on Friday 29 August, with director Camille Ghekiere, the producers of Het Bataljon, a fantastic group of 15 volunteer extras and, above all, three rising stars playing the roles of Tariq, Sadia and Danish. This project is supported by Ghent University through the Social Valorisation Fund, the Faculty Valorisation Fund of the Faculty of Law and Criminology, and the Freya Vander Laenen Fund for the involvement of experts by experience in research.
